Correcting Severe Dental Problems in San Diego

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Correcting Severe Dental Problems in San Diego Each separate restorative and cosmetic dentistry procedure performed in San Diego can address a specific dental problem. For example, a porcelain veneer can perfect the surface of a tooth that is discolored or slightly misshapen. Dental bonding can fill a small chip in an otherwise healthy tooth.

Some San Diego dental problems are more extensive and require a combination of procedures. Crown restoration combined with soft tissue grafts can restore a severely decayed tooth with the root exposed. A bone graft and dental implant can restore a missing tooth in an area where the jaw bone has receded. Orthodontia followed by tooth bleaching totally transforms a smile by straightening and whitening.

What is the difference between tooth bleaching and whitening? Whitening is the term for procedures which remove surface stains to restore the degree of natural lightness. Bleaching goes even further by lightening teeth beyond their natural shade. That’s right: you don’t have to resign yourself to yellow teeth even if they have been that way your whole life! The natural shade of your teeth, by the way, like your skin and hair color, is determined by genetics.

Some San Diego smiles have been gleaming for years by regular whitening. You can maintain the whiteness of your teeth just as you maintain your fitness level. (Of course it is a lot easier to make a quick visit to your San Diego dentist once a year for whitening touch-ups than sweating in a gym several times a week!)

We live in an age where severe dental problems can be permanently corrected. You don’t have to participate in a TV makeover show in Hollywood to access these premium cosmetic dental procedures. They are available right here in San Diego. Dr. Marcos Ortega has the same advanced training and extensive experience as the dentists who keep the smiles of famous actors and musicians camera-ready.

Schedule a consultation at Marcos Ortega DDS to discover the perfect combination of procedures to achieve your ultimate smile. Our phone number is 619-295-4545.

Aesthetic Dental Transformations in San Diego

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Aesthetic Dental Transformations in San Diego Many San Diego professionals, students and retirees are enjoying the lasting benefits of aesthetic dentistry. A beautiful smile not only looks great, it makes you feel great! When you first look in the mirror in the morning while brushing those gleaming babies, you remember; oh yeah, I fixed my teeth and they look fantastic!

When you smile at old friends or make new ones, you are happy to show off your new movie-star grin. When you are in a professional setting speaking with colleagues or clients, you feel poised and super confident.

We have talked about different cosmetic and restorative dental procedures available in San Diego in previous blog articles, but let’s review the most common.

Veneers are glass-like, wafer-thin covers that adhere to teeth. Porcelain veneers are strong and have the translucency of natural teeth. They correct chips, stains and misaligned teeth that do not require orthodontia. There are several companies that fabricate veneers. One of the most well-known brand names is Lumineers.

Crowns correct more extensive tooth problems. They are used in a variety of situations such as the final restoration following a root canal or to restore teeth damaged by decay, injury or periodontal disease.

Dental implants are one of the best fixes for a missing tooth. They are becoming a popular and effective alternative to bridges and partial dentures in San Diego and surrounding areas, especially among middle-aged professionals and people in the public eye.

Bridges are another strong, natural looking replacement for one or more missing teeth. They have been used with success for many years.

Professional tooth whitening in your dentist’s office is the least invasive and quickest way to brighten your smile several shades. One of the most popular systems is called Zoom!.

If you are interested in any of these safe and effective procedures, schedule a consultation at Marcos Ortega DDS today. Even if you are still a bit hesitant, remember: discussing your options with a cosmetic dentist does not require a commitment of any kind. It is merely a relaxed way to get the most reliable information.

We are waiting for your call. Marcos Ortega DDS can be reached at 619-295-4545.

Affordable San Diego Cosmetic Dentistry

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Affordable San Diego Cosmetic Dentistry Will your California dental insurance cover San Diego cosmetic dental procedures? Many San Diego dentistry clients assume their dental insurance won’t cover any cosmetic dental procedures. This is probably true for tooth bleaching or first time dental bonding. However, many California dental insurance plans and dental supplemental plans cover orthodontia and any treatment needed to repair damage from an injury. Medical insurance and worker’s compensation plans may also cover injury treatment.

Some California dental insurance plans cover replacement porcelain veneers in certain circumstances. Check with your carrier for benefit specifics if you need replacement veneers due to deterioration. We can then discuss dental treatment options such as replacement veneers or porcelain crowns. When the work is completed, we may be able to help you submit your dental claim form if your plan requires one.

If you are in need of any kind of dental treatment; from a cleaning to major restorative work, come in to Marcos Ortega DDS on 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego. You can meet our very comfortable and friendly team, undergo a thorough evaluation and discuss financing options. Even if you do not have California dental insurance, let’s talk. San Diego Cosmetic Dental Artistry

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

San Diego Cosmetic Dental Artistry San Diego cosmetic dentistry is part science and part art.

I’m Dr. Marcos Ortega of Marcos Ortega DDS and enjoy using my extensive dental training and specialized artistic skills to design treatment plans unique to each of my San Diego cosmetic dental clients.

In order to achieve an attractive, yet natural looking result, I do much more than recommend specific procedures. I consider the shape, alignment, color and condition of the teeth. In order to create a balanced look, the facial shape and coloring is taken into account. The San Diego dentistry client’s age, health condition and lifestyle all influence the plan.

At Marcos Ortega DDS, there is no one size fits all treatment plan.

My artistic abilities have been perfected over several years of creating smile transformations for my cosmetic dentistry clients. I am constantly receiving the latest training in new techniques and materials.

Even fairly recent cosmetic dental procedures such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers have advanced considerably. Dental implants are a truly remarkable solution for our California dental clients who have lost one or more teeth.

I would love to design a personalized smile makeover for you. When the work has been completed and you are enjoying your new look, it will only be obvious to those who see you all the time. Others will assume you have always been blessed with a naturally beautiful and healthy smile.

Gummy Smile?

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Gummy Smile? Many San Diego cosmetic dentistry patients with a gummy smile undergo crown lengthening surgery to bring proper balance and symmetry to their smile. Gum tissue and, in some cases, bone is removed to expose more of the visible part of a tooth. It is a safe procedure that does not affect healthy tooth structure.

A ‘gummy smile’ is a term used to describe a smile with teeth that appear too short because an unusual amount of bone and soft tissue hide part of the crown. Our San Diego cosmetic dental patients who have opted for crown lengthening love how their new perfect smile looks and feels. Some of our crown lengthening clients also choose teeth whitening for an extra-dazzling smile!

Crown lengthening is not used solely for cosmetic reasons. When a tooth is injured and breaks at the gum line or if a filling or crown comes off a tooth that contains decay, crown lengthening makes additional tooth structure accessible for further restorative work. It is also used to treat some types of periodontal disease.

At Marcos Ortega DDS, we perform cosmetic and restorative crown lengthening for patients in the San Diego area. The surgery can be performed by a general dentist, periodontist or oral surgeon.

If you are interested in crown lengthening or other cosmetic dental procedures and live in the San Diego area, schedule an exam with Dr. Marcos Ortega by calling 619-295-4545. We are conveniently located at 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego. When you come in, we can show you before and after photos of California cosmetic dentistry clients who are enjoying their new smile.

Marcos Ortega DDS on Jaw Bone Deterioration

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

San Diego Jaw Bone Deterioration To remain dense, your jaw bone requires the continual stimulation and pressure of chewing, biting and talking. Each of your teeth has a root structure attached to the surrounding bone material. As each tooth absorbs the forces of everyday mouth function, it stimulates the bone to which the root is attached.

When a tooth is extracted, the jaw bone that previously surrounded the root structure begins to recede. Though tooth extraction is often the only possible treatment for our San Diego patients with tooth damage beyond repair, every effort should be made to preserve the root structure.

Fortunately, tooth implants provide a new root which keeps the surrounding bone healthy and strong. A dental implant consists of a titanium post which is placed in the jaw bone. It replaces the original root and eventually integrates into the surrounding bone. After the implant has been placed and the surrounding bone has healed and meshed with the implant, a post is inserted into the implant. The new artificial tooth, or crown, is then attached to the post. Implant restoration is a safe and effective treatment for tooth loss.

To learn more about dental implants, call Dr. Marcos Ortega at 619-295-4545. The friendly professionals at Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego provide world-class dental treatment for patients in San Diego and the surrounding areas.

Dental Crowns at Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Dental Crowns at Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego Dental crowns have been used in dentistry for over 2000 years. There is evidence that the Etruscans experimented with crowns on teeth using ivory and bone as early as 700 B.C. By 200 A.D., they began using gold crowns to construct artificial teeth. Ancient Egyptians fashioned tooth replacements out of seashells and then hammered them into their gums (Oral sedation, anyone?).

Porcelain crowns were first used in the 1800s. With the refining of metal casting methods in the 1900s, crown dentistry advanced significantly.

Today, crowns are strong, comfortable and are made to match your surrounding teeth.

Dental crowns (also called caps) cover the entire visible portion of the tooth and are cemented in place. Crowns are used to strengthen teeth that have been worn down or weakened by decay or injury. Crowns are also used to restore the original shape of a tooth or solely to improve the appearance of a tooth.

The most common types of crowns are:

  • All-porcelain (ceramic)
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal
  • Gold

The material used is determined by several factors. If you suspect you need a crown, want to replace an old crown, or want to learn about other cosmetic dentistry procedures, call Dentist Dr. Marcos Ortega at 619-295-4545. Marcos Ortega DDS is located at 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego. We have been serving clients in the San Diego area since 1986. We can recommend the best tooth restoration or cosmetic dentistry option for you.
