San Diego Dentists And Your Mouth Sores

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

San Diego Dentists And Your Mouth Sores As your local San Diego dentist, one of my roles is to help you take care of your mouth. Sometimes mouth sores can be an issue, and while San Diego dentists often defer to an oral surgeon for extreme cases, we can help you make an assessment.

If you live in the San Diego area and have a mouth sore that lasts more than a week or two; come and see me. Mouth sores can be an indicator of disease, and an early assessment is the best bet. A better understanding of your mouth sores can lead quickly to comfort and a resolution. If necessary, treatment and pain relief can be offered.  We offer emergency dental treatment.

There are two common types of mouth sores that are common in the San Diego area; canker sores and cold sores.

Canker sores are small ulcer-like sores with a white or gray base and a red border. They are found on the inside of the mouth and while they are not contagious, they can be painful. Typically a canker sore heals in a week or two. Antimicrobal mouth-rinses, over-the-counter topical anesthetics, and avoiding spicy and acidic foods may offer you temporary relief while your sore is healing.

The cause of a canker sores is not certain. Possible explanations range from a cut on the inside the mouth, and reactions to extreme temperatures or acids from food or drink, to fatigue, stress, and allergies. Some studies point to bacteria or viruses, or combinations of all these factors.

Cold sores, also called fever blisters or Herpes Simplex, are groups of fluid-filled blisters that often appear around the lips, sometimes appearing under the nose or around the chin. Cold sores are contagious and painful, but usually heal in about a week. Some over-the-counter anesthetics may provide relief. There are some antiviral drugs on the market that have shown promise in reducing outbreaks, but there is currently no known cure. The initial infection, known as primary herpes, often occurs before adulthood. Once the virus infects you, it may stay in your body and remain inactive or cause occasional cold sore outbreaks. Outbreaks may be triggered by a fever, sunburn, skin abrasions, stress, or exposure to extremes in temperature.

As your San Diego cosmetic dentist, I can’t do much to stop canker sores or cold sores in your mouth. I can discuss the health of your mouth, and examine any causes that make your mouth sore. In some cases a change in the way you care for your mouth can reduce the chances of getting mouth sores. If you are in the San Diego, and would like to speak with a dental professional about mouth sores, area give us a call at Marcos Ortega DDS.  We also offer cosmetic dentistry services such as teeth whitening and dental veneers.

Our number is 619-717-8459.

Keep Teeth Healthy During Pregnancy

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Dental Cleanings During Pregnancy If you are pregnant, your oral health may be the last thing on your mind. However, many San Diego women experience an increase in dental problems during pregnancy. This article contains important information for expectant San Diego mothers and those planning to become pregnant.

Dr. Marcos Ortega recommends having a thorough cosmetic dental cleaning early in your pregnancy. Lying in a dentist’s chair can be uncomfortable during the last trimester. A professional cleaning performed by one of the skilled dental hygienists at Marcos Ortega DDS, along with diligent brushing and flossing, helps prevent gum problems that are often triggered by hormonal changes. The American Dental Association has found a positive correlation between periodontal disease and preterm deliveries and low birth weight.

If you are currently pregnant and have sore, swollen or bleeding gums, schedule an appointment today by calling 619-717-8459. Once the baby is here, it will probably be harder for you to make time for a dental visit.

If you receive dental treatment at Marcos Ortega DDS during your pregnancy, be sure to inform Dentist Dr. Marcos Ortega that you are expecting. This will affect decisions about X-rays, pain relievers, antibiotics, and sedation dentistry.

Hormonal changes cause an increase in plague production which can lead to decay. If you are eating many small meals during the day, take care to brush after eating. If you avoid sweet snacks, your teeth will be less likely to develop cavities.

Remember, your oral care, nutrition and lifestyle affect your baby. It is essential that you eat a healthy diet with a variety of foods. A poor diet can harm your baby’s tooth and bone development. Be sure to get enough calcium, iron, vitamins A, D and C, protein, and phosphorus. Your San Diego Ob/Gyn can give you specific recommendations for your age, height, weight and medical conditions.

At Marcos Ortega DDS, we take special care of our clients who are expecting.

Dental Sealants

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

San Diego Cosmetic Dentistry Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities because is difficult to reach them with a tooth brush and the surfaces contain pits and grooves that easily trap bacteria. It is hard for many adults to clean their back molars and almost impossible for young children.

Dental sealants fill in the pits and grooves on the rear molars to create a smooth surface. San Diego general and cosmetic dentists most often recommend sealants for children’s permanent back teeth, though sometimes they are used for adults, too.

Dental sealants protect teeth that have no decay (primary prevention) and also prevent further decay progression in teeth that show very early signs of disease (secondary prevention).

At Marcos Ortega DDS, we take special care of our San Diego cosmetic dental clients. We want each patient’s dental visits to be pleasant and painless so they will never develop a fear of the dentist. Ask us about some of our cosmetic dental services such as Invisalign invisible braces and teeth whitening.

I am Dr. Marcos Ortega of Marcos Ortega DDS. I don’t believe that cavities are unavoidable. Call my office at 619-717-8459 to schedule a San Diego dental exam.

I provide comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry for San Diego people of all ages. My office is located at 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego. You can learn more about my practice at http://www.mysandiegosmiles.com/doctors.htm

Dental Check Up

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

When is the last time you had a dental checkup? Most people in the San Diego area between the ages of 25 and 75 need a dental checkup every six months. If you live in San Diego and are at higher risk for oral diseases, you should have your teeth checked every four months, or at least three times a year.

Come into our office, located at 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego, or give us a call to make a cosmetic dental appointment. You can visit our website at http://www.MySanDiegoSmiles.com for more information.

Most people in our San Diego community are in a medium to low risk category. However if you use tobacco or alcohol, eat a lot of sugar in your diet (including lots of soda), or have poor oral hygiene habits, you are likely in a higher risk category and should have your teeth checked right away.

I look at a lot of factors to determine your personal dental hygiene, and your dental outlook for your future. I want you to have the healthiest smile possible so that you can enjoy your teeth for many years without significant problems. If you live in the San Diego area and are ready to have your teeth checked, please give Marcos Ortega DDS a call.

Our very comfortable and friendly staff will be ready to get you started with a dental checkup.  We also offer cosmetic dentistry services such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers.

Talk to you soon.

Cavity Fighting Chewing Gum For Our San Diego Patients?

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

San Diego Oral Dentistry I’m Dr. Marcos Ortega DDS of Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego. My San Diego cosmetic dentistry clients often ask me if chewing xylitol gum is an effective substitute for tooth brushing and regular San Diego dental exams.

Before I answer that question, let me tell you a little bit about xylitol:

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that was first discovered in birch tree bark but is also found in many fruits and vegetables. Unlike most other sweeteners (natural or synthetic), xylitol is actually good for your teeth. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that xylitol prevents the growth of the bacteria that initiates decay. It also reduces plaque and strengthens tooth enamel.

Xylitol has other benefits, as well. Because it is low on the glycemic index, many of my San Diego diabetic patients enjoy it as a healthy alternative to sugar. If my San Diego cosmetic dentistry patients complain about frequent dry mouth, I recommend Xylitol gum or mints to stimulate saliva production without promoting tooth decay.

Now, back to the golden question. Is xylitol gum just as effective as brushing your teeth and seeing your San Diego family dentist regularly? Absolutely not! If you cannot brush your teeth after a meal, chewing xylitol gum for five or ten minutes is probably a good idea. However, you should still brush your teeth thoroughly (with a soft brush) after meals and get twice-yearly exams and oral dentistry deep cleanings at your San Diego dentistry clinic.

At Marcos Ortega DDS, our goal is to keep your smile healthy and beautiful for life by preventing dental problems before they start. If you postpone San Diego dental visits until you feel pain, you risk losing teeth and most certainly will require more extensive treatment than if the problem was caught earlier. Is it time for a dental exam? Call us at 619-717-8459 to book an appointment. Our very friendly staff is waiting to take care of all your cosmetic dental needs.  We also offer sedation dentistry for anxious patients.

Give Me Some Air

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Air Abrasion Dentists How long have dentists been drilling teeth? Would you believe 9,000 years? In an ancient graveyard in Pakistan, archaeologists unearthed skulls containing teeth that had undergone drilling. The stone-age dentists removed decay using drills constructed of sharpened flint.

Though advanced dentistry would not be possible without drilling, the sound of a dental drill can make many San Diego patient’s hearts pound. However, there is another way your cosmetic dentists can remove decay. This technique is known as air abrasion or drill-less dentistry. An air abrasion instrument removes material by spraying tiny aluminum oxide particles onto the tooth. The particles work like a sandblaster spraying away the affected tooth structure.

The many advantages of air abrasion make it a popular procedure for cosmetic dentists. Because air abrasion is usually pain free, the need for anesthesia is reduced. The air abrasion instrument does not create vibrations or pressure. San Diego cosmetic dentistry patients appreciate the fact that air abrasion instruments don’t produce that whiny drill sound that rings in your ears and makes your palms sweat. Because of this, air abrasion can be a less-frightening option for young dentistry patients. Air abrasion is often quicker and more precise than traditional drilling, leaving more of the healthy tooth intact.  Many emergency dental treatments also use air abrasion.

At Marcos Ortega DDS, we provide anxiety-free dentistry with sedation dentistry. If you would like to learn more about air abrasion, dentistry sedation or dental implant cost, call us at 619-717-8459. We are located at 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego. The very comfortable and friendly staff at Marcos Ortega DDS is dedicated to your comfort and satisfaction.

Find A Dentist

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

There are a lot of places to look for a dentist, but its not always easy to find a dentist in San Diego.

It used to be that in San Diego you could find a dentist just by walking down to the corner of the street. Like many small towns, there would be a dentist on the corner of ‘north and main’, just up from the fire house, and across from the bakery.

Today, finding a dentist around San Diego can take a little more time, and a little more effort. Our local San Diego community is spread out a little more, and there is more than one option for finding a local dentist in San Diego.

Let’s look at a few of the ways to find a local dentist in San Diego:

The old timers among us still reach for the yellow pages when we look to find a dentist in our local San Diego community. The yellow pages have been a standard for dentists since the beginning, and are a quick way to get a good list of local San Diego dentists.

Studies are showing an ever increasing number of San Diego consumers are turning to their Internet connection to find a dentist. To find a dentist online can mean more than just a name and a phone number; many dentists, like us, have additional information on their website that will help you gain a better understanding of their practice and the services they provide.

Many people find a dentist in the San Diego community through printed mailers and flyers that come to your door. San Diego dentists spend a lot of money on these types of flyers, which can often carry a discount opportunity or special promotion.

The most popular method used to find a local dentist? …Word of mouth. Studies have shown that people in San Diego are more willing to listen to a family member or close friend when it comes to finding a local San Diego dentist.

We understand this last point, and make it our job to keep our patients happy, healthy, informed and comfortable during their visit to the dentist. We know if you leave happy, your friends and family in the San Diego area will hear about us, too.

If you are looking for a dentist in San Diego, please give us a call. You can reach us at 619-717-8459.

If you know a friend who is trying to find a dentist in the San Diego area, please pass our name along.

We look forward to seeing you both!

Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego Hello! I’m Dr. Marcos Ortega, DDS, of Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego.

I have been practicing general and cosmetic dentistry since 1986. Dentistry is a challenging and fascinating profession; dentists must have diagnostic skills, dexterity, extensive scientific knowledge, and good visual memory. Dentistry also requires artistic ability. In addition to the technical aspects of dentistry, I really enjoy interacting with my San Diego dental patients.

I recognize that my clients have other choices in San Diego area dental practices, and I work continually to earn their trust and surpass their expectations.

Each Mission Hills, Mission Valley, and Hillcrest dentistry client is unique. Many of my patients come in twice-yearly for an exam and cleaning. We help them maintain excellent oral health. Some Bankers Hill cosmetic dentistry clients come to me seeking major restorative dental work. It is extremely gratifying to complete a smile makeover and see the client’s reaction when they see the result for the first time.

When I have a pre-treatment consultation with a new Hillcrest dentistry client, it is very informative for both of us. The patient learns the specifics about the possible procedures and I learn about the clients’ goals, concerns and expectations. Then I work with the client to develop a dental treatment plan that fits the patient’s needs, desired outcome and budget.

My dental practice is located at 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego. If you are looking for an experienced dentist in the San Diego area, call 619-717-8459 to schedule a consultation.

I look forward to meeting with you.
