Hi, I’m Dentist Dr. Marcos Ortega, DDS. Most every day, I can be found at my San Diego area dental office treating dental patients with tooth and gum problems or helping patients prevent them. There are many common medical conditions that pose a risk to oral health.
1) San Diego diabetes patients with high blood glucose often have a higher risk of dental issues. If you have diabetes, let’s talk. My number is 619-295-4545.
2) A persistent dry mouth due to an inadequate amount of saliva can accelerate tooth decay, cause or contribute to gum disease, and trigger chronic bad breath. Many medications used by thousands of San Diego folks, including those for high-blood pressure and depression, cause dry mouth. This side effect is not only unpleasant, it is dangerous. Anti-depressants (especially SSRI’s) and anti-psychotic drugs can also trigger tooth-grinding (bruxism).
3) Acid reflux in children and adults is associated with a host of dental problems such as decay and periodontal disease.
I help many dental patients prevent problems associated with medical conditions that sometimes seem unrelated to dental health. Regular professional dental care is essential for oral health, and an important part of your overall physical health.

Periodontal disease in California is more common than you might think, and can be cured with varying degrees of treatment depending on the severity.
What is periodontal disease? According to this article on Wikipedia, periodontal disease is ‘the name of a collection of inflammatory diseases affecting the tissues that surround and support the teeth.’
Periodontal disease, more commonly called ‘gum disease’, is an inflammation or infection of the gums. Periodontal disease can be very painful in some extreme conditions, and can limit your ability to eat normally. In some cases, periodontal disease can affect your smile, and can create cosmetic concerns.
If left untreated, periodontal disease can cause irreversible damage. When caught early and treated, periodontal disease can be little more than an inconvenience. However the best policy is to practice good dental hygiene to keep periodontal disease at bay.
One of the best ways to avoid periodontal disease is to get a regular dental check up at your local San Diego dentist.
Give us a call at 619-295-4545 to schedule your next dental checkup; we look forward to seeing you.

Many San Diego professionals, students and retirees are enjoying the lasting benefits of aesthetic dentistry. A beautiful smile not only looks great, it makes you feel great! When you first look in the mirror in the morning while brushing those gleaming babies, you remember; oh yeah, I fixed my teeth and they look fantastic!
When you smile at old friends or make new ones, you are happy to show off your new movie-star grin. When you are in a professional setting speaking with colleagues or clients, you feel poised and super confident.
We have talked about different cosmetic and restorative dental procedures available in San Diego in previous blog articles, but let’s review the most common.
Veneers are glass-like, wafer-thin covers that adhere to teeth. Porcelain veneers are strong and have the translucency of natural teeth. They correct chips, stains and misaligned teeth that do not require orthodontia. There are several companies that fabricate veneers. One of the most well-known brand names is Lumineers.
Crowns correct more extensive tooth problems. They are used in a variety of situations such as the final restoration following a root canal or to restore teeth damaged by decay, injury or periodontal disease.
Dental implants are one of the best fixes for a missing tooth. They are becoming a popular and effective alternative to bridges and partial dentures in San Diego and surrounding areas, especially among middle-aged professionals and people in the public eye.
Bridges are another strong, natural looking replacement for one or more missing teeth. They have been used with success for many years.
Professional tooth whitening in your dentist’s office is the least invasive and quickest way to brighten your smile several shades. One of the most popular systems is called Zoom!.
If you are interested in any of these safe and effective procedures, schedule a consultation at Marcos Ortega DDS today. Even if you are still a bit hesitant, remember: discussing your options with a cosmetic dentist does not require a commitment of any kind. It is merely a relaxed way to get the most reliable information.
We are waiting for your call. Marcos Ortega DDS can be reached at 619-295-4545.

Will your California dental insurance cover San Diego cosmetic dental procedures? Many San Diego dentistry clients assume their dental insurance won’t cover any cosmetic dental procedures. This is probably true for tooth bleaching or first time dental bonding. However, many California dental insurance plans and dental supplemental plans cover orthodontia and any treatment needed to repair damage from an injury. Medical insurance and worker’s compensation plans may also cover injury treatment.
Some California dental insurance plans cover replacement porcelain veneers in certain circumstances. Check with your carrier for benefit specifics if you need replacement veneers due to deterioration. We can then discuss dental treatment options such as replacement veneers or porcelain crowns. When the work is completed, we may be able to help you submit your dental claim form if your plan requires one.
If you are in need of any kind of dental treatment; from a cleaning to major restorative work, come in to Marcos Ortega DDS on 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego. You can meet our very comfortable and friendly team, undergo a thorough evaluation and discuss financing options. Even if you do not have California dental insurance, let’s talk. Top quality San Diego dental treatment is a wise investment and may be more affordable than you think.

Picture the following scenario: You are stretched out in a chair at your dentist’s office holding a remote as you try to tune into your favorite California radio station. An assistant clips a paper bib around your neck. Someone switches on a bright overhead light and you see latex-gloved hands moving toward your open mouth. You close your eyes.
As you read this, does your heart begin racing? Are your palms sweaty?
If so, you may be a good candidate for sedation dentistry. Oral sedation benefits nervous dental patients in San Diego every day. Moderate sedation is used for all types of dental procedures such as root canals, dental implants, and wisdom teeth removal. If you are considering extensive restorative or cosmetic dental work, conscious sedation may allow your dentist to complete multiple procedures in a single visit.
Don’t let fear prevent you from getting the dental treatment you need. Schedule a visit with Dr. Marcos Ortega to learn about conscious sedation dentistry.

Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure in San Diego and throughout California.
Numerous ads for whitening products in our local San Diego media contain terms such as ‘white brite’, ‘22 carbamide peroxide’ and ‘peroxide teeth’. They look tempting, but how do you separate tooth bleaching fact from fiction?
First, and especially for our local San Diego California patients, we recommend talking to Dr. Marcos Ortega DDS at Marcos Ortega DDS at our San Diego office. Just because teeth whitening products are readily available, it doesn’t mean they are all safe or appropriate for every person. Getting a professional opinion is a good first step.
Don’t be fooled by smile whitening hype and risk damage, especially if you need tetracycline teeth whitening. If you have existing cosmetic dental work such as crowns, bonding, partial dentures or bridge work, it is especially important to talk to a San Diego dental professional about worry free dentistry teeth whitening.
Teeth whitening kits are not the only way to quickly improve your smile. Many of your neighbors have benefited from porcelain veneers. There are several brands of veneers such as Lumineers by Cerinate, da Vinci and Mac. We can help you decide on which is best for you.
Veneers are sometimes called ‘instant orthodontics’ because they can correct tooth misalignment and gaps as well as provide instant teeth whitening.
Porcelain veneers can also fix chipped teeth and cover stains. The vast majority of San Diego veneer recipients are extremely pleased with the results.
Providing comprehensive dental care for San Diego families since 1986.
