Smile Perfection in San Diego

September 16th, 2011 by moprospect

“The most difficult part of attaining perfection is finding something to do for an encore.” -Author Unknown

We are perfectionists at Marcos Ortega DDS, where we create perfect smiles for our San Diego cosmetic dentistry and smile makeover patients.

Here are some of the cosmetic dental procedures we use in smile makeovers at Marcos Ortega DDS, Cosmetic and Sedation Dentistry in San Diego.

Implant Dentistry
Dental implants are the ultimate tooth restoration available in San Diego or anywhere else, for that matter. A tooth implant consists of a metal post that is inserted into your jawbone. The post replaces the root of the missing tooth.

After a few months, it meshes with your jawbone to provide the strength and integrity of a natural tooth. A base and natural-looking crown is permanently attached to the post. For most San Diego patients with missing teeth, it is the preferred restoration. Implants can also be used to attach dentures and partial dentures for no-slip implant/denture combos.

Crowns
A mainstay of San Diego cosmetic dentistry, dental crowns are more beautiful than ever. New fabrication technologies and materials have improved the aesthetics and strength of this restorative option.

Veneers
Dental veneers are a more conservative treatment than a full crown. This is a good choice for San Diego patients whose teeth are structurally sound but have unsightly flaws such as discoloration, chips, cracks, or imperfect shape. Are you one of the many San Diego teens or adults with dark tetracycline stains? Call us today at 619-717-8459 to say goodbye to tetracycline stains!

Inlays/Onlays
Inlays and onlays (indirect fillings) are designed and fabricated using dental CAD/CAM software. These fillings are strong, attractive, and precisely fitted to the cavity.

Tooth Whitening
Teeth whitening is the crowning touch for a perfect smile. (It’s the only thing you need if you are a fortunate San Diego man or woman with perfectly-shaped and aligned teeth.) No one has to live with dull or stained teeth. Call us today for a teeth whitening consultation at our San Diego office.

Preventing Tooth Decay in California

September 7th, 2011 by moprospect

Preventing Tooth Decay in California In San Diego, tooth decay is one of the most common childhood problems, yet tooth decay also affects adults. Marcos Ortega DDS serves people from 25 to 75 years old to help fight tooth decay.

Bacteria are a common cause of tooth decay. Bacteria live in your mouth and combine with plaque and acids to break down the enamel coating on your teeth. The breakdown of your tooth enamel can often result in the development of small holes in your teeth which are known as cavities. The breaking down of your tooth enamel in is known as tooth decay, and it is a serious dental problem for children and adults in California.

California tooth decay is typically a result of diet and oral hygiene choices. When sticky foods are consumed and allowed to sit on the teeth, or foods full of sugars and starches are consumed frequently throughout the day, tooth decay can result. Foods to avoid include soda and sugary chewing gum; these foods tend to stay around for a while and create an environment where bacteria thrive. To help prevent tooth decay, simply limit sugary and starchy foods between meals. Also, brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing at least once a day, and visiting your local San Diego cosmetic dentist in California for regular check ups and cleanings will help prevent tooth decay.

Hello, my name is Marcos Ortega, and I am a dentist and I work at Marcos Ortega DDS located at 306 Walnut Ave, Ste 25 San Diego, California . Tooth decay is a preventable dental problem, and I can help. I will be happy to meet you, and to give you an idea of the many ways we can help you prevent tooth decay and avoid a more costly or even painful ailment.

We at specialize in cosmetic dentistry and sedation dentistry and would be happy to discuss with you any health concerns related to your teeth. Give us a call at 619-717-8459.

San Diego Dentists And Your Mouth Sores

August 31st, 2011 by moprospect

San Diego Dentists And Your Mouth Sores As your local San Diego dentist, one of my roles is to help you take care of your mouth. Sometimes mouth sores can be an issue, and while San Diego dentists often defer to an oral surgeon for extreme cases, we can help you make an assessment.

If you live in the San Diego area and have a mouth sore that lasts more than a week or two; come and see me. Mouth sores can be an indicator of disease, and an early assessment is the best bet. A better understanding of your mouth sores can lead quickly to comfort and a resolution. If necessary, treatment and pain relief can be offered.  We offer emergency dental treatment.

There are two common types of mouth sores that are common in the San Diego area; canker sores and cold sores.

Canker sores are small ulcer-like sores with a white or gray base and a red border. They are found on the inside of the mouth and while they are not contagious, they can be painful. Typically a canker sore heals in a week or two. Antimicrobal mouth-rinses, over-the-counter topical anesthetics, and avoiding spicy and acidic foods may offer you temporary relief while your sore is healing.

The cause of a canker sores is not certain. Possible explanations range from a cut on the inside the mouth, and reactions to extreme temperatures or acids from food or drink, to fatigue, stress, and allergies. Some studies point to bacteria or viruses, or combinations of all these factors.

Cold sores, also called fever blisters or Herpes Simplex, are groups of fluid-filled blisters that often appear around the lips, sometimes appearing under the nose or around the chin. Cold sores are contagious and painful, but usually heal in about a week. Some over-the-counter anesthetics may provide relief. There are some antiviral drugs on the market that have shown promise in reducing outbreaks, but there is currently no known cure. The initial infection, known as primary herpes, often occurs before adulthood. Once the virus infects you, it may stay in your body and remain inactive or cause occasional cold sore outbreaks. Outbreaks may be triggered by a fever, sunburn, skin abrasions, stress, or exposure to extremes in temperature.

As your San Diego cosmetic dentist, I can’t do much to stop canker sores or cold sores in your mouth. I can discuss the health of your mouth, and examine any causes that make your mouth sore. In some cases a change in the way you care for your mouth can reduce the chances of getting mouth sores. If you are in the San Diego, and would like to speak with a dental professional about mouth sores, area give us a call at Marcos Ortega DDS.  We also offer cosmetic dentistry services such as teeth whitening and dental veneers.

Our number is 619-717-8459.

Ouch! Are Your Teeth Sensitive In San Diego?

August 19th, 2011 by moprospect

Are Your Teeth Sensitive In San Diego?

For those of you in the San Diego area who feel pain when you sip your morning coffee or who cringe each time you brush or floss, Marcos Ortega DDS is here for you.

Dr. Marcos Ortega has been treating this common problem since 1986.

The first line of defense against tooth sensitivity is proper oral hygiene. Incorrect brushing and over-brushing can result in receding gums, which leads to the exposure of microscopic tubules in the dentin. When these tubules are exposed, acidic, hot, cold, and sticky foods can then reach the nerve cells in the teeth causing discomfort.

Here in our San Diego dentistry practice, our knowledgeable staff can determine if your brushing style is contributing to your tooth sensitivity and get you on your way to proper oral care habits.

Marcos Ortega usually recommends an over-the-counter desensitizing toothpaste that will alleviate tooth pain after several applications. Most San Diego Wal-Mart and Hillcrest Sav-On stores carry it. However, some San Diego patients may need in-office procedures such as fluoride gel treatments available at Marcos Ortega DDS.

Don’t worry if you have sensitive teeth in San Diego and want to have your teeth whitened. Here at Marcos Ortega DDS, Dr. Ortega can determine which professional tooth whitening or at-home whitening procedures will work for you.

Call our San Diego cosmetic dental office today to get relief from your sensitive teeth.  We also offer emergency dental care.

What is a Canted Midline?

August 12th, 2011 by moprospect

San Diego Cosmetic Dentists Dr. Marcos Ortega considers many factors when designing a smile for a San Diego smile makeover client. One of the smile design elements involved is the facial midline. The facial midline can be determined by drawing an imaginary line from the center of the eyebrows to the center of the two peaks in the top lip (Cupid’s bow).

The skilled San Diego cosmetic dentist considers the length and angle of the facial midline to properly position porcelain crowns, veneers and dental implants. When front teeth restorations do not line up with the facial midline, it is called a canted midline. This is a common mistake found in the cosmetic work of inexperienced San Diego cosmetic dentists.

Most San Diego dentistry patients do not realize the level of 3-D engineering required in cosmetic dentistry. In addition to the orientation in relation to the facial midline, there is also the angle and size of the teeth in relation to each other and in relation to the size and shape of the lips and gums.

If you are considering an extensive smile makeover, you do not want to trust your smile to an inexperienced San Diego cosmetic dentist. When you have a smile design consultation with Dr. Marcos Ortega feel free to ask probing questions about Dr. Ortega’s experience and technical design procedures. We are confident that you will feel comfortable choosing Dr. Ortega for your smile makeover.

Marcos Ortega DDS is located at 306 Walnut Ave, Ste 25 in San Diego. We offer a full range of general and cosmetic dental procedures. Ask us about dental veneers, clear braces, and tooth whitening. We look forward to meeting you. Call us today at 619-717-8459.

Cosmetic Dentistry vs. General Dentistry In San Diego

August 5th, 2011 by moprospect

San Diego Cosmetic Dentistry Hello, I’m Dr. Marcos Ortega. Welcome to my San Diego cosmetic dentistry blog. Today’s article focuses on the difference between general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

General dentists in San Diego are dedicated to preventing and treating oral disease such as cavities and gum disease. When a problem is diagnosed, let’s say, a cavity between two teeth, a general dentist will assess the best way to restore the tooth involved.

San Diego cosmetic dentists perform elective dental procedures that make a smile more attractive. Cosmetic dentistry procedures available at Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego include teeth whitening, tooth-colored fillings, dental bonding, veneers, inlays, onlays, and dental crowns.

Some San Diego dentists, like myself, offer both general and cosmetic dentistry procedures. In some cases, there is a cosmetic component to restorative procedures. For example, if a San Diego dental patient comes in after receiving an injury that chipped a front tooth, the tooth needs to be restored to prevent decay. The tooth is also less structurally sound, so it is vulnerable to further damage. In addition, the tooth affects the overall appearance of the smile. Depending on the specifics of the damage, there are several of restorative options. Dental bonding, porcelain veneers, and crowns are all used to repair a damaged tooth.

As you can see, there is not always a definitive line between general and cosmetic dentistry. At Marcos Ortega DDS, my very comfortable and friendly team provides the full spectrum of preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dental procedures.

Experienced San Diego dental professionals who perform general, orthodontic, and cosmetic dental procedures can meet all of your families’ dental needs.

If you are looking for a full-service dental practice in the San Diego area, I invite you to come into Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego, We are located at 306 Walnut Ave, Ste 25. To schedule an oral examination or smile makeover consultation, call 619-717-8459.

Beware Of An Acidic Diet In San Diego

July 22nd, 2011 by moprospect

San Diego tooth strengthening Most San Diego folks don’t often think of a tooth as a body part that fluctuates in strength. Our teeth seem to have a steady hardness and dependably grind food whenever we need them. However, teeth are dynamic organisms with chemical processes that occur continually.

The protective enamel that covers the softer interior is made of minerals. Enamel demineralizes (loses some of its density) when coming in contact with acids. Saliva can dilute and neutralize acid so the tooth can remineralize (re-harden). This process isn’t instantaneous, however. While the enamel is soft, the tooth is vulnerable to losing a microscopic outer layer of enamel. If the erosion continues, the much softer dentin is exposed. Eventually, the tooth may need to be extracted.

At Marcos Ortega DDS, we are noticing an increase in cases of serious acid erosion. It is apparent that the typical San Diego diet is becoming more acidic.

The list of acidic foods may surprise you. They include eggs, gravy, asparagus, chicken, cottage cheese, honey, fish, ham, butter, sour cream, aged cheese, and yogurt with active cultures. Generally, food with a high sugar or artificial sweetener content are highly acidic.

Now let’s talk about drinks. You probably already know that soda pop and wine are not good for your teeth. San Diego teens that sip soda all day can have acid erosion while their young teeth should be at their strongest. In addition to soda, energy drinks are very popular in California and San Diego cosmetic dentists are noticing the effects on their dental patients’ tooth enamel.

If you drink soda or energy drinks often, you may want to drink water or chew sugarless gum after downing a can. Stimulating saliva production can speed up the remineralization process.

If your teeth have become more sensitive in general, or in response to hot or cold foods or beverages, you may have acid erosion. To schedule an examination with Dr. Marcos Ortega at Marcos Ortega DDS, call 619-717-8459 today.

We are a full-service dental office with hundreds of satisfied clients in San Diego.  We are located at 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego. We are working to raise awareness of the oral health dangers of acid erosion. We hope you have benefited from this Marcos Ortega DDS blog article and look forward to your visit.  We also offer sedation dentistry and emergency dental care in San Diego.

Sedation Dentistry In San Diego

July 15th, 2011 by moprospect

San Diego sedation dentistry Many San Diego dentistry patients have discovered the benefits of anxiety-free dentistry (sometimes called sedation dentistry). There are three main types of sedation options available in the San Diego area.

Inhalation

Nitrous Oxide, sometimes called ‘laughing gas‘ has been used in Hillcrest cosmetic dental offices for over a century, because, in many ways, it is an ideal sedative. It begins to work quickly, but then wears off as soon as the San Diego dental patient stops inhaling it. Breathing nitrous oxide can produce warm tingling sensations and a feeling of euphoria.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedatives take longer to work than nitrous, but produce a calmer state for many nervous Hillcrest dental patients. Triazolam and diazepam are common oral sedatives used in dentistry. These sedative medications are routinely prescribed by San Diego physicians for anxiety, insomnia, and muscle spasms.

Oral sedation is a good sedation choice for anxious patients who require a lengthy dental procedure such as dental implants. After the dental visit, it takes a while for the medication to wear off. A Bankers Hill conscious sedation patient should not plan to drive home after undergoing dental sedation.

IV Sedation

Like nitrous, intra-venous sedation starts working immediately as the sedative enters the bloodstream. IV sedation usually produces the deepest state of relaxation. IV patients can dream away the entire procedure and wake up calm and relaxed.

To schedule a dental sedation consultation, call Marcos Ortega DDS at 619-717-8459. We have the answer for your dental anxiety.

Versatile Veneers for a Vivid Smile

July 1st, 2011 by moprospect

Affordable Cosmetic Dentistry in San Diego Have you ever wished you could quickly attach perfectly shaped, dazzling white front surfaces to your teeth? Guess what? You can! With porcelain veneers, you can eliminate smile imperfections in just one visit to your San Diego cosmetic dental office.

The porcelain veneer is one of the most versatile items in a San Diego cosmetic dentist’s toolbox. Veneers turn unattractive smiles into perfect smiles with minimal disruption to existing tooth structure. They are quicker and usually less expensive than complete crowns but are made with the same strong, translucent porcelain.

It’s no that wonder that a very large percentage of people in the public eye have porcelain veneers. A California actress can receive a perfect smile in the morning and appear on a talk show that evening. A supermodel can permanently remedy a discolored tooth and pose for photos right after leaving her Hillcrest dental office. A San Diego television news anchorman can have his teeth perfectly aligned in a couple hours and report California news that same day.

I am Dr. Marcos Ortega of Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego, California. I use veneers alone and in combination with crowns, inlays, onlays, and dental implants for dramatic smile makeovers. Perhaps porcelain veneers are the best route to your perfect smile.

Let’s talk. My office can be reached at 619-717-8459

We are located at 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego.
