Dental Implants In San Diego

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Cosmetic Dentistry The best permanent tooth replacement treatment available to San Diego people who are missing teeth are dental implants.

A dental implant is a metal (ideally titanium) rod implanted into the bone to replace the missing root. Dental crowns and supporting structures are securely and permanently attached to the rod. Titanium is amazingly strong and extremely well tolerated by the human body. There are very few instances of rejection. In fact, most San Diego implant dentists are not familiar with any such cases.

Tooth implants offer a long-term solution to tooth loss. Are you a good San Diego candidate for dental implant surgery?

Because the metal rod is anchored into the jaw bone, it is essential that you have enough healthy bone at the implant site. Dr. Marcos Ortega can determine if you do.

Age is rarely a factor. Dental implants have proved to be successful for San Diego area people of all ages. Dr. Ortega provides comprehensive dental care for all your cosmetic dentistry needs.

There are a few medical issues that may affect your eligibility for implants. These include diabetes, osteoporosis, radiation therapy for cancer, parathyroid disorders, bone disorders and leukemia. The presence of one or more of these conditions does not necessarily mean an implant cannot work for you; discuss any health issues with Dr. Ortega during your implant consultation. If you are nervous about having intensive dental work done, please ask us about sedation dentistry.

Marcos Ortega DDS is located at 306 Walnut Ave, Ste 25 in San Diego. Call 619-717-8459 to schedule an implant consultation.

Missing Teeth In San Diego? Dentures And Implants Restore Smiles

Missing Teeth In San Diego? Dentures And Implants Restore Smiles

If you have had years of dental problems or are embarrassed by your teeth, our very comfortable and friendly team at Marcos Ortega DDS can help you find the restoration procedure right for you. You could be a candidate for implant-supported dentures or dental implants.

Our Marcos Ortega DDS dental lab creates restorations that look just like natural teeth: attractive, healthy teeth.

If you still have some healthy, natural teeth, you can benefit from implant-supported dentures without having your healthy teeth extracted.

Partial dentures fill in the gaps, replacing missing teeth to complete a smile. Partial dentures can prevent natural teeth from moving. Many San Diego dental practices can complete these procedures in one day.

Many dental insurance providers cover most or all of the cost of these restorations. Call us at Marcos Ortega DDS and we can help you find out if your dental insurance covers implant supported dentures.

Another alternative for San Diego people with missing teeth is to receive dental implants. A dental implant is a permanent tooth restoration that is anchored into the jawbone, actually replacing both the root and crown of the tooth. Dental implants have many advantages, such as preventing jaw bone recession which can occur when natural teeth are removed. However, not all San Diego cosmetic dentistry patients are good candidates for implants. Call Marcos Ortega DDS at 619-717-8459 for a dental implant consultation.

Dental implants can also be used to anchor a removable denture. The denture is ‘snapped on’ or attached to the implants for no-slip confidence.

The combination denture/implant smile restoration solution is being used successfully by many San Diego dentists. It is usually more affordable than dental implant replacements for several natural teeth.

Replacing missing teeth will benefit your appearance and your health, improving your ability to eat and speak. If you are embarrassed to smile or laugh, it’s time to bring back your beautiful smile!

Energy Drink Warning For San Diego

Friday, December 16th, 2011

Mission Hills Smile Redesign Hello. I’m Dr. Marcos Ortega.

Welcome to my San Diego cosmetic dental blog. Today’s topic is energy drinks and the damage they can cause to your teeth. I am seeing more and more San Diego teens and adults with tooth enamel erosion caused by frequent consumption of sport drinks.

Most of these San Diego cosmetic dentistry patients take good care of their teeth, brush and flush, and come into Marcos Ortega DDS for a twice-yearly exam and deep cleaning. But guess what? If you drink energy drinks regularly, your enamel can erode even if you practice immaculate oral hygiene.

Energy drinks like Red Bull, Rock Star, and Monster are a cocktail of powerful acids and other enamel-eroding substances. Most of them contain citric acid, fruit juices, loads of sugar, and a potent chemical that gives them their bright fluorescent color.

Perhaps, like myself, you have often noticed young people walking out of San Diego convenience stores swigging 32-ounce energy drinks. I am concerned that local teens do not understand the serious dental consequences of frequent acid baths.

The following is from ABC Sports:

“Sports drinks are increasingly damaging the teeth of professional and recreational athletes, one of Australia’s top sports dentists has warned. Dr. Brett Dorney says he has witnessed a huge increase in dental erosion since the Sidney Olympics, when he was the event’s deputy director of dental services.”

Here is an excerpt from a recent CNN Story:

“Researchers at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry found the energy drinks and sports drinks eroded the enamel more than soda and fruit juices.”

I need to add the caveat that soda and fruit juices also contain acids that can damage teeth.

If your teeth have enamel erosion, whatever the cause, we can restore your smile with advanced cosmetic dentistry. Crowns, porcelain veneers, inlays and onlays can correct both structural and cosmetic problems.

Our phone number is 619-717-8459. If you are interested in re-designing your smile, come in for an exam and consultation. With cutting-edge cosmetic dentistry, as well as emergency dental care, we can repair acid-damaged teeth and dramatically increase your face value.

Cosmetic Dentistry: Keeping Teeth Beautiful In San Diego

Cosmetic Dentistry: Gum Contouring In San Diego

If you are a regular visitor to our blog here at Marcos Ortega DDS, you have probably read many articles on cosmetic dentistry procedures. Dr. Marcos Ortega is a master of smile makeovers.

Dental bridges, crowns, and porcelain veneers can take care of teeth that are chipped, broken, or misshapen.

Our  San Diego clients with stained or dull teeth can have a sparkly white smile with teeth whitening. For ordinary cavities, there are tooth-colored fillings, inlays, and onlays.

Dental implants are gaining popularity in San Diego among dental patients who want to restore missing teeth. If your teeth are misaligned, there are a number of orthodontic options here at Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego.

What is the best way to keep my teeth healthy?

Brushing and flossing is the best way to prevent decay.

Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and carefully flossing removes the food from our teeth and inhibits the build up of plaque. If we let food stay on our teeth, the starches in the food will mix with the plaque. This nasty mixture forms an acid which immediately starts drilling into the enamel to form cavities. Brushing can’t get all the spaces between your teeth, so you’ve got to floss also.

Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable in San Diego

Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable in San Diego

Pain isn’t fun. Your San Diego cosmetic dentist knows this, and that is why the dental team at Marcos Ortega DDS have made patient comfort a top priority. In conjunction with creating a relaxing environment, your dentist has various medications that can reduce and even eliminate pain associated with different dental procedures to give you a more enjoyable experience.

Some of the most common pain-relieving medications used in San Diego dentist offices and around the country are topical anesthetics. These are swabbed directly onto mouth tissue so they only numb the very surface layers. Topical anesthetics can reduce the pain of mouth sores, or they can be applied to prepare the mouth for an injection.

Local anesthetics are injected into mouth tissue (usually the gums) to block the nerve sensations to specific areas of the mouth. San Diego dentists numb the mouth in this way before filling cavities, treating gum disease, or before certain cosmetic dentistry procedures.

More involved dental procedures may necessitate the need for nitrous oxide or even general anesthesia. Ask us about sedation dentistry and oral conscious sedation.

It is very common for your dentist to recommend an over the counter analgesic to relieve pain after a dental visit. These medications include aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen.

Because your San Diego cosmetic dentist will most likely use a pain reliever during the dental visit or prescribe something for you to take after the treatment, make sure you jot down a complete list of medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, before each appointment.

I’m Dr. Marcos Ortega and I want San Diego residents to be informed about their dental care, especially as it pertains to pain relief during dental treatment. If you are in the San Diego area and are looking for quality dental care, please contact my office today at 619-717-8459. Our very friendly staff would be happy to talk to you about dental implants, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, and the other services we offer.

Cosmetic Dental Solutions in San Diego

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Cosmetic Dental Solutions in San Diego San Diego cosmetic dentists use dental crowns to solve a number of dental dilemmas. A dental crown is a strong, natural-looking permanent tooth restoration that covers the top of the damaged tooth.

San Diego family dentists recommend crowns to remedy the following problems:

  • A broken tooth with decay
  • An ill-fitting existing crown
  • A decayed tooth that has lost significant tooth structure
  • A tooth that has had a root canal
  • A tooth that is too small or misshapen
  • A tooth that causes a bite problem

Before your San Diego dentist can attach the crown to your tooth, we must prepare the tooth. Family dentists often apply a local anesthetic so you won’t feel pain during the prepping. Your dentist will remove decay, if any, and shape the tooth to receive the crown. Then a mold is taken of the prepped tooth and surrounding teeth.

A temporary crown is then placed on the tooth to protect it until you return to your San Diego cosmetic dentistry office to receive the permanent restoration. The patient needs to be careful while wearing the temporary crown. Vigorous brushing or flossing can displace the crown or damage the exposed soft tissue. The San Diego dental crown patient should also refrain from eating extremely hard foods like nuts or sticky candy.

The mold of your teeth is sent to a San Diego dental lab where your crown is built. Dental crowns are fabricated in three varieties: tooth colored crowns made of resin or porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and solid metal crowns. Each type has its pros and cons. Your San Diego cosmetic dentist Dr. Marcos Ortega DDS will choose the best crown material for your particular tooth.

What if you need a permanent dental restoration for both the top and root of your tooth? A dental implant is your answer.

For more information about complete dental restorations and other cosmetic dental solutions, call Marcos Ortega DDS at 619-717-8459 today.

New Protein For San Diego Dental Implant Patients

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Bankers Hill Dental Implants Hundreds of San Diego dental implant recipients have replaced missing teeth with jaw-bone anchored tooth implants. Unlike a dental bridge, a tooth implant consists of a titanium post inserted into the jaw bone. The bone meshes with the post to create a strong base for the natural-looking prosthetic tooth and dental crown that attaches to the post.

Dental implants are usually the ideal restoration for San Diego people who want to replace a missing tooth. There is a problem, however, if the jaw bone is too thin at the implant site.

When a tooth is extracted, the bone loses the blood circulation at the former site of the root. Consequently, bone recession often occurs. If the recession is extensive, there is not enough bone to hold the dental implant post.

Bone grafting can augment the bone at the implant site and provide the bone density necessary for a successful implant. This is usually effective, but it does require time for the new bone to generate. A new discovery may provide a quicker solution for regenerating bone.

Researchers at the Georgia Health Sciences University College of Dental Medicine have identified a protein that quickly stimulates the production of new bone. The research team, led by Dr. Ulf M.E. Wikesjo, implanted bone morphogenetic protein in test subjects and discovered that “more new bone formed within four weeks than with conventional bone grafting.”

This protein will require extensive testing before it is available for San Diego dental implant patients. However, I am pleased at the prospect of an additional method for making dental implants possible for my San Diego clients with missing teeth and jaw bone recession.

For information about cosmetic dentistry options including tooth implants, dental bridges, and porcelain crowns, call Marcos Ortega DDS at 619-717-8459.
