Dental Implants In San Diego

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Cosmetic Dentistry The best permanent tooth replacement treatment available to San Diego people who are missing teeth are dental implants.

A dental implant is a metal (ideally titanium) rod implanted into the bone to replace the missing root. Dental crowns and supporting structures are securely and permanently attached to the rod. Titanium is amazingly strong and extremely well tolerated by the human body. There are very few instances of rejection. In fact, most San Diego implant dentists are not familiar with any such cases.

Tooth implants offer a long-term solution to tooth loss. Are you a good San Diego candidate for dental implant surgery?

Because the metal rod is anchored into the jaw bone, it is essential that you have enough healthy bone at the implant site. Dr. Marcos Ortega can determine if you do.

Age is rarely a factor. Dental implants have proved to be successful for San Diego area people of all ages. Dr. Ortega provides comprehensive dental care for all your cosmetic dentistry needs.

There are a few medical issues that may affect your eligibility for implants. These include diabetes, osteoporosis, radiation therapy for cancer, parathyroid disorders, bone disorders and leukemia. The presence of one or more of these conditions does not necessarily mean an implant cannot work for you; discuss any health issues with Dr. Ortega during your implant consultation. If you are nervous about having intensive dental work done, please ask us about sedation dentistry.

Marcos Ortega DDS is located at 306 Walnut Ave, Ste 25 in San Diego. Call 619-717-8459 to schedule an implant consultation.

Missing Teeth In San Diego? Dentures And Implants Restore Smiles

Missing Teeth In San Diego? Dentures And Implants Restore Smiles

If you have had years of dental problems or are embarrassed by your teeth, our very comfortable and friendly team at Marcos Ortega DDS can help you find the restoration procedure right for you. You could be a candidate for implant-supported dentures or dental implants.

Our Marcos Ortega DDS dental lab creates restorations that look just like natural teeth: attractive, healthy teeth.

If you still have some healthy, natural teeth, you can benefit from implant-supported dentures without having your healthy teeth extracted.

Partial dentures fill in the gaps, replacing missing teeth to complete a smile. Partial dentures can prevent natural teeth from moving. Many San Diego dental practices can complete these procedures in one day.

Many dental insurance providers cover most or all of the cost of these restorations. Call us at Marcos Ortega DDS and we can help you find out if your dental insurance covers implant supported dentures.

Another alternative for San Diego people with missing teeth is to receive dental implants. A dental implant is a permanent tooth restoration that is anchored into the jawbone, actually replacing both the root and crown of the tooth. Dental implants have many advantages, such as preventing jaw bone recession which can occur when natural teeth are removed. However, not all San Diego cosmetic dentistry patients are good candidates for implants. Call Marcos Ortega DDS at 619-717-8459 for a dental implant consultation.

Dental implants can also be used to anchor a removable denture. The denture is ‘snapped on’ or attached to the implants for no-slip confidence.

The combination denture/implant smile restoration solution is being used successfully by many San Diego dentists. It is usually more affordable than dental implant replacements for several natural teeth.

Replacing missing teeth will benefit your appearance and your health, improving your ability to eat and speak. If you are embarrassed to smile or laugh, it’s time to bring back your beautiful smile!

Tooth Brushing Basics For Healthy Smiles In San Diego

Friday, December 9th, 2011

San Diego Teeth Bleaching Why should everyone in San Diego brush at least twice a day? Let’s take a look at why this is so important.

Brushing and flossing is the best way to prevent decay.

Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and carefully flossing removes the food from our teeth and inhibits the build up of plaque. If we let food stay on our teeth, the starches in the food will mix with the plaque. This nasty mixture forms an acid which immediately starts drilling into the enamel to form cavities. Brushing can’t get all the spaces between your teeth, so you’ve got to floss also.

Brushing and flossing keeps gums and bone healthy.

If you let gum disease go untreated, you can lose teeth that are cavity-free!

The progression of gum disease (gingivitis) goes like this:

  1. Plaque build-up irritates gums.
  2. Irritated gums pull away from teeth.
  3. Bacteria multiplies in the spaces between the gum and tooth.
  4. The bone holding the tooth is eaten by the bacteria.
  5. Say goodbye to the tooth.

The good news is that gingivitis can be reversed if detected early. Losing a tooth can lead to the need for dental implants or a dental crown. We offer both these services and more at our San Diego sedation dentistry office.

Call Dr. Marcos Ortega DDS at 619-717-8459 to schedule a gum disease evaluation at our cosmetic dental office in San Diego.

Marcos Ortega DDS Guide To Healthy Tooth Enamel

Marcos Ortega DDS Guide To Healthy Tooth Enamel

Here at Marcos Ortega DDS, we want your teeth to last a lifetime! Tooth enamel is one of the hardest parts of the body, but it is non-renewable so it is important not to not neglect or abuse our teeth. Daily teeth and gum care is the best way to protect tooth enamel.

Even though every San Diego drug store carries hard bristle brushes, we recommend brushing with a soft brush after every meal to gently brush away acid. Scrub too hard, and you can erode enamel. It is ideal to brush immediately after eating, but brushing within 60 minutes of a meal has benefits. The quicker you remove food from your teeth, the better it is for your enamel.

Flossing regularly is also important to keep gums healthy. Whether the food is on tooth surfaces, or hidden in between, it is not doing your enamel any good.

Dr. Marcos Ortega recommends a checkup and thorough cleaning from your San Diego cosmetic dentists every six months. Our skilled hygienists remove tartar, a substance that attracts plaque to the surface of the teeth and can weaken the teeth’s structures. Regular checkups prevent problems and save you money on expensive restorations (like dental implants) down the road.

Remember: don’t use your teeth for opening packages! Keep scissors and bottle openers handy. At Marcos Ortega DDS, we often provide emergency dental treatment restorative dental work as a result of patients using their teeth as tools. Biting down on something too hard, like ice or hard candy can also damage enamel.

Attention San Diego athletes: be sure to use a mouthguard for team, contact, and recreational sports.

Lastly, remember: drink water. Coffee, sports drinks, soda, wine, and tea all contain a lot of acid or sugar, and in some cases both. Cut back, or at least use a straw. These drinks cause a lot of tooth decay for non-water drinkers in the San Diego.

We hope you find these Marcos Ortega DDS tips helpful. For more information on dental care, or to schedule an appointment, contact our San Diego sedation dentist office today at 619-717-8459!

Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable in San Diego

Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable in San Diego

Pain isn’t fun. Your San Diego cosmetic dentist knows this, and that is why the dental team at Marcos Ortega DDS have made patient comfort a top priority. In conjunction with creating a relaxing environment, your dentist has various medications that can reduce and even eliminate pain associated with different dental procedures to give you a more enjoyable experience.

Some of the most common pain-relieving medications used in San Diego dentist offices and around the country are topical anesthetics. These are swabbed directly onto mouth tissue so they only numb the very surface layers. Topical anesthetics can reduce the pain of mouth sores, or they can be applied to prepare the mouth for an injection.

Local anesthetics are injected into mouth tissue (usually the gums) to block the nerve sensations to specific areas of the mouth. San Diego dentists numb the mouth in this way before filling cavities, treating gum disease, or before certain cosmetic dentistry procedures.

More involved dental procedures may necessitate the need for nitrous oxide or even general anesthesia. Ask us about sedation dentistry and oral conscious sedation.

It is very common for your dentist to recommend an over the counter analgesic to relieve pain after a dental visit. These medications include aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen.

Because your San Diego cosmetic dentist will most likely use a pain reliever during the dental visit or prescribe something for you to take after the treatment, make sure you jot down a complete list of medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, before each appointment.

I’m Dr. Marcos Ortega and I want San Diego residents to be informed about their dental care, especially as it pertains to pain relief during dental treatment. If you are in the San Diego area and are looking for quality dental care, please contact my office today at 619-717-8459. Our very friendly staff would be happy to talk to you about dental implants, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, and the other services we offer.

Smile Perfection in San Diego

Friday, September 16th, 2011

“The most difficult part of attaining perfection is finding something to do for an encore.” -Author Unknown

We are perfectionists at Marcos Ortega DDS, where we create perfect smiles for our San Diego cosmetic dentistry and smile makeover patients.

Here are some of the cosmetic dental procedures we use in smile makeovers at Marcos Ortega DDS, Cosmetic and Sedation Dentistry in San Diego.

Implant Dentistry
Dental implants are the ultimate tooth restoration available in San Diego or anywhere else, for that matter. A tooth implant consists of a metal post that is inserted into your jawbone. The post replaces the root of the missing tooth.

After a few months, it meshes with your jawbone to provide the strength and integrity of a natural tooth. A base and natural-looking crown is permanently attached to the post. For most San Diego patients with missing teeth, it is the preferred restoration. Implants can also be used to attach dentures and partial dentures for no-slip implant/denture combos.

Crowns
A mainstay of San Diego cosmetic dentistry, dental crowns are more beautiful than ever. New fabrication technologies and materials have improved the aesthetics and strength of this restorative option.

Veneers
Dental veneers are a more conservative treatment than a full crown. This is a good choice for San Diego patients whose teeth are structurally sound but have unsightly flaws such as discoloration, chips, cracks, or imperfect shape. Are you one of the many San Diego teens or adults with dark tetracycline stains? Call us today at 619-717-8459 to say goodbye to tetracycline stains!

Inlays/Onlays
Inlays and onlays (indirect fillings) are designed and fabricated using dental CAD/CAM software. These fillings are strong, attractive, and precisely fitted to the cavity.

Tooth Whitening
Teeth whitening is the crowning touch for a perfect smile. (It’s the only thing you need if you are a fortunate San Diego man or woman with perfectly-shaped and aligned teeth.) No one has to live with dull or stained teeth. Call us today for a teeth whitening consultation at our San Diego office.

What is a Canted Midline?

Friday, August 12th, 2011

San Diego Cosmetic Dentists Dr. Marcos Ortega considers many factors when designing a smile for a San Diego smile makeover client. One of the smile design elements involved is the facial midline. The facial midline can be determined by drawing an imaginary line from the center of the eyebrows to the center of the two peaks in the top lip (Cupid’s bow).

The skilled San Diego cosmetic dentist considers the length and angle of the facial midline to properly position porcelain crowns, veneers and dental implants. When front teeth restorations do not line up with the facial midline, it is called a canted midline. This is a common mistake found in the cosmetic work of inexperienced San Diego cosmetic dentists.

Most San Diego dentistry patients do not realize the level of 3-D engineering required in cosmetic dentistry. In addition to the orientation in relation to the facial midline, there is also the angle and size of the teeth in relation to each other and in relation to the size and shape of the lips and gums.

If you are considering an extensive smile makeover, you do not want to trust your smile to an inexperienced San Diego cosmetic dentist. When you have a smile design consultation with Dr. Marcos Ortega feel free to ask probing questions about Dr. Ortega’s experience and technical design procedures. We are confident that you will feel comfortable choosing Dr. Ortega for your smile makeover.

Marcos Ortega DDS is located at 306 Walnut Ave, Ste 25 in San Diego. We offer a full range of general and cosmetic dental procedures. Ask us about dental veneers, clear braces, and tooth whitening. We look forward to meeting you. Call us today at 619-717-8459.

Sedation Dentistry In San Diego

Friday, July 15th, 2011

San Diego sedation dentistry Many San Diego dentistry patients have discovered the benefits of anxiety-free dentistry (sometimes called sedation dentistry). There are three main types of sedation options available in the San Diego area.

Inhalation

Nitrous Oxide, sometimes called ‘laughing gas‘ has been used in Hillcrest cosmetic dental offices for over a century, because, in many ways, it is an ideal sedative. It begins to work quickly, but then wears off as soon as the San Diego dental patient stops inhaling it. Breathing nitrous oxide can produce warm tingling sensations and a feeling of euphoria.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedatives take longer to work than nitrous, but produce a calmer state for many nervous Hillcrest dental patients. Triazolam and diazepam are common oral sedatives used in dentistry. These sedative medications are routinely prescribed by San Diego physicians for anxiety, insomnia, and muscle spasms.

Oral sedation is a good sedation choice for anxious patients who require a lengthy dental procedure such as dental implants. After the dental visit, it takes a while for the medication to wear off. A Bankers Hill conscious sedation patient should not plan to drive home after undergoing dental sedation.

IV Sedation

Like nitrous, intra-venous sedation starts working immediately as the sedative enters the bloodstream. IV sedation usually produces the deepest state of relaxation. IV patients can dream away the entire procedure and wake up calm and relaxed.

To schedule a dental sedation consultation, call Marcos Ortega DDS at 619-717-8459. We have the answer for your dental anxiety.

Versatile Veneers for a Vivid Smile

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Affordable Cosmetic Dentistry in San Diego Have you ever wished you could quickly attach perfectly shaped, dazzling white front surfaces to your teeth? Guess what? You can! With porcelain veneers, you can eliminate smile imperfections in just one visit to your San Diego cosmetic dental office.

The porcelain veneer is one of the most versatile items in a San Diego cosmetic dentist’s toolbox. Veneers turn unattractive smiles into perfect smiles with minimal disruption to existing tooth structure. They are quicker and usually less expensive than complete crowns but are made with the same strong, translucent porcelain.

It’s no that wonder that a very large percentage of people in the public eye have porcelain veneers. A California actress can receive a perfect smile in the morning and appear on a talk show that evening. A supermodel can permanently remedy a discolored tooth and pose for photos right after leaving her Hillcrest dental office. A San Diego television news anchorman can have his teeth perfectly aligned in a couple hours and report California news that same day.

I am Dr. Marcos Ortega of Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego, California. I use veneers alone and in combination with crowns, inlays, onlays, and dental implants for dramatic smile makeovers. Perhaps porcelain veneers are the best route to your perfect smile.

Let’s talk. My office can be reached at 619-717-8459

We are located at 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego.
