San Diego Tooth Implants

Q: For San Diego residents: When is the least expensive tooth replacement method really the most expensive?

A: When it ends up costing far more in the long run.

Many San Diego dentistry clients who lose a tooth do not understand the importance of replacing it with a dental implant. They wrongly believe that one missing tooth is not a significant problem. In fact, some people in Mission Hills or San Diego who have an abscessed tooth extracted are so glad the pain is gone that they forget that the extraction is not the solution. When a tooth is lost, the risk of losing the adjacent teeth increases dramatically.

Dr. David Scharf, a Board Certified Periodontist and Dental Implant Surgeon and a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York University College of Dentistry says:

“Many times consumers will choose to replace a missing tooth with a removable partial denture because it is the least expensive option. In the long run however, removable partial dentures may be more costly due the loss of adjacent teeth and the need for future replacements. Many people opt to replace teeth with dental implants because they do not compromise the survival of the adjacent teeth.”

Dr. Scharf notes…

“With the price of gasoline and food soaring people try to cut back wherever they can. Unfortunately choosing the least expensive options for tooth replacement can have some very costly ramifications down the road.”

If you are missing a tooth, you may still be able to save the adjacent teeth if receive an implant soon. An implant bonds chemically with the jaw bone and helps maintain its stability.

To schedule a dental implant consultation, call Marcos Ortega DDS at 619-717-8459. In addition to cosmetic dentistry, we provide comprehensive general dentistry for families in the San Diego, California area.

Which Tooth Whitener Works Best in San Diego?

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Dazzling White Teeth in San Diego What is the best professional tooth whitening system to use in San Diego?

There are two types of dentist-supervised tooth whitening systems available in San Diego. In order to determine the best choice for your teeth, schedule, and budget, you need to understand the differences in the systems.

Both systems use a bleaching agent containing peroxide. San Diego dentists who offer professional in-office tooth bleaching use a whitening gel with a high concentration of peroxide. Some Mission Hills, Mission Valley, and San Diego in-office tooth whitening systems use a light that causes the tooth bleaching agent to work faster. There are different types of lights including halogen, plasma arc, metal halide and laser; but they all work the same way. When the light is shined at teeth on which the whitening gel is applied, it causes the peroxide to break down into free radicals, which are active oxygen molecules. This process naturally occurs without the light, but the light makes it happen faster. That is why you can get whiter teeth in just one hour.

Most San Diego cosmetic dentists also offer take home tooth whitening systems. Although these procedures take a bit longer to work, they achieve the same dramatic results. For many clients, this is the most affordable teeth whitening system.

At Marcos Ortega DDS, we offer safe and effective teeth whitening. Our San Diego cosmetic dentistry patients can’t believe how great their teeth look when they remove the stains and restore the brightness. If you would like to learn why our system is superior, schedule a consultation by calling our office at 619-717-8459.

Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego Hello! I’m Dr. Marcos Ortega, DDS, of Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego.

I have been practicing general and cosmetic dentistry since 1986. Dentistry is a challenging and fascinating profession; dentists must have diagnostic skills, dexterity, extensive scientific knowledge, and good visual memory. Dentistry also requires artistic ability. In addition to the technical aspects of dentistry, I really enjoy interacting with my San Diego dental patients.

I recognize that my clients have other choices in San Diego area dental practices, and I work continually to earn their trust and surpass their expectations.

Each Mission Hills, Mission Valley, and Hillcrest dentistry client is unique. Many of my patients come in twice-yearly for an exam and cleaning. We help them maintain excellent oral health. Some Bankers Hill cosmetic dentistry clients come to me seeking major restorative dental work. It is extremely gratifying to complete a smile makeover and see the client’s reaction when they see the result for the first time.

When I have a pre-treatment consultation with a new Hillcrest dentistry client, it is very informative for both of us. The patient learns the specifics about the possible procedures and I learn about the clients’ goals, concerns and expectations. Then I work with the client to develop a dental treatment plan that fits the patient’s needs, desired outcome and budget.

My dental practice is located at 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego. If you are looking for an experienced dentist in the San Diego area, call 619-717-8459 to schedule a consultation.

I look forward to meeting with you.

Your California Dentist And Cleaning Your Teeth

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Your California Dentist And Cleaning Your TeethCalifornia is known for its beautiful smiles, and our local San Diego community is no exception. Keeping your teeth clean is an important factor in maintaining your beautiful San Diego smile. One of the benefits of regularly visiting your local San Diego California dentist is a thorough teeth cleaning and a review of your brushing habits.

Our San Diego dental hygienist helps you keep your teeth clean by assessing the condition of your teeth, and recommending improvements to your daily teeth cleaning habits. Our San Diego oral hygienist can also professionally clean and polish your teeth at your regular San Diego dental check up. You should schedule a regular dental check up every six months.

I am a and I work at Marcos Ortega DDS located in the state of California. We specialize in cosmetic and sedation dentistry in the San Diego California community, including the surrounding areas of Hillcrest, Mission Hills, Mission Valley.

Cleaning your teeth in California is the simple task of removing plaque (a sticky deposit that gets left on teeth in which bacteria thrives) and tartar (a calcium deposit that forms on teeth and aids in tooth decay). This is done by brushing regularly with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and flossing. Brushing and flossing at least twice each day can keep plaque and tartar from building up on your teeth and results in cleaner, healthier teeth. A regular visit to your local San Diego dental hygienist will help you stay on top of problems that can go unseen.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends visiting your local San Diego, California dentist at least once every 6 months for a regular dental check up and teeth cleaning. These regular visits to your California dentist potentially prevent the undetected development of problems that can occur from neglecting to clean your teeth.

To keep that beautiful San Diego California smile in good shape, come in for a dental check up and teeth cleaning.

Call Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego California to make an appointment. You can reach us right now at 619-295-4545.

Treating Bite Problems in San Diego

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Treating Bite Problems in San Diego Malocclusions (bite problems) include overbites, underbites and crossbites. Jaw alignment disorders restrict proper chewing, talking, and swallowing. They can also cause teeth to shift around in the mouth. San Diego dentistry patients with bite problems are at a greater risk for tooth decay and periodontal disease because bite misalignment often makes it difficult to maintain proper oral hygiene.

When the lower jaw is smaller than the upper jaw, it is called an overbite. When the situation is reversed, it is called an underbite. Crossbite occurs when lower teeth are in the wrong position.

Bite problems can cause headaches and TMJ pain. Some dental patients with severe bite problems develop a distorted facial shape and damaged teeth.

If you suspect your toddler or older child has a bite problem, it is important to see your San Diego dentist as soon as possible. Bite issues and their various related problems get worse over time.

At Marcos Ortega DDS, we diagnose and successfully treat bite problems in addition to providing general and cosmetic dentistry. We can be reached at 619-295-4545. Our office is located at 306 Walnut Ave., Suite 25 in San Diego. You can find out more about us at http://www.MySanDiegoSmiles.com.

Choosing A Dentist In San Diego

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Choosing A Dentist In San DiegoThe American Dental Association offers some welcome advice for choosing a dentist in San Diego. We have already talked about how word of mouth is an important factor in how many people find a dentist. Here are some things you should look for in an San Diego dentist:

Location is always a factor when choosing a dentist in San Diego. If you live in the San Diego California area, there are many options, and most San Diego locations are not too far out of the way. While location plays an important role in convenience, many people are willing to drive a little farther for a better experience with their San Diego dentist.

Relationship is a strong factor. Your San Diego dentist should be approachable, and should make you feel comfortable when you are in the dentist chair. After all, your dentist will be working very close with you to help you achieve a high level of oral hygiene; you most certainly will want to have a good, professional, comfortable relationship with your dentist and the dental office staff.

Specialty is another important factor in choosing a dentist in San Diego. Some dentists specialize in cosmetic dentistry. Others specialize in corrective dentistry such as braces. Depending on your need, you may select a local San Diego dentist who can solve your immediate concern. Bare in mind, however, that it is good to have a general dentist who can maintain your dental history and work with you to through the years.

If you are looking for a dentist in San Diego, please come by and speak with me. I can address your interest in any of these critical areas, and will be happy to introduce you to Marcos Ortega DDS.

I look forward to meeting you.
