Find A Dentist

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

There are a lot of places to look for a dentist, but its not always easy to find a dentist in San Diego.

It used to be that in San Diego you could find a dentist just by walking down to the corner of the street. Like many small towns, there would be a dentist on the corner of ‘north and main’, just up from the fire house, and across from the bakery.

Today, finding a dentist around San Diego can take a little more time, and a little more effort. Our local San Diego community is spread out a little more, and there is more than one option for finding a local dentist in San Diego.

Let’s look at a few of the ways to find a local dentist in San Diego:

The old timers among us still reach for the yellow pages when we look to find a dentist in our local San Diego community. The yellow pages have been a standard for dentists since the beginning, and are a quick way to get a good list of local San Diego dentists.

Studies are showing an ever increasing number of San Diego consumers are turning to their Internet connection to find a dentist. To find a dentist online can mean more than just a name and a phone number; many dentists, like us, have additional information on their website that will help you gain a better understanding of their practice and the services they provide.

Many people find a dentist in the San Diego community through printed mailers and flyers that come to your door. San Diego dentists spend a lot of money on these types of flyers, which can often carry a discount opportunity or special promotion.

The most popular method used to find a local dentist? …Word of mouth. Studies have shown that people in San Diego are more willing to listen to a family member or close friend when it comes to finding a local San Diego dentist.

We understand this last point, and make it our job to keep our patients happy, healthy, informed and comfortable during their visit to the dentist. We know if you leave happy, your friends and family in the San Diego area will hear about us, too.

If you are looking for a dentist in San Diego, please give us a call. You can reach us at 619-717-8459.

If you know a friend who is trying to find a dentist in the San Diego area, please pass our name along.

We look forward to seeing you both!

Advanced Dentistry in San Diego

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Advanced Dentistry in San Diego The world of dentistry continues to advance at a rapid pace. If you have visited a San Diego dentist in the past few years, you have probably noticed the things that make your visit more comfortable, such as the ability to watch TV or listen to music while receiving treatment. Many San Diego dentistry patients welcome oral conscious sedation to reduce or eliminate pain.

What may not be as obvious are the advances in techniques, tools and materials. Top San Diego dentists now use digital computer imaging which is safer than traditional x-rays. Dental technicians can store, retrieve and transmit digital images much easier than was possible with traditional x-ray film.

The use of lasers has also changed the face of dentistry. Laser surgery requires less anesthesia, minimizes swelling, and protects surrounding tissue. San Diego family dentists use lasers for detecting and treating cavities and dental technicians use them for the curing of restorative materials.

Another exciting development in cosmetic dentistry is the CAD-CAM technology that allows Bankers Hill cosmetic dentists to perform restorations in a single visit. The types of procedures that can be completed in one visit include crowns, fillings, inlays, onlays and veneers.

If you need a thorough exam or want to improve your smile with cosmetic dentistry, call Marcos Ortega DDS at 619-295-4545 to schedule a consultation. During your consultation, you can see before and after photos of some of our smile makeover clients. We would love to help you achieve the smile you have always wanted, and we have the tools, experience and technology to make that happen.

Endodontists
Endodontists specialize in root canal therapy and other procedures involving the root and surrounding parts of the tooth.

Periodontists
Periodontists treat the conditions affecting gum tissue and the bone surrounding the teeth. If you have gingivitis or more advanced periodontal disease, you may be referred to a periodontist in San Diego.

Prosthodontists
Repairing damaged teeth and replacing lost teeth for San Diego patients is called ‘restorative dentistry’. Prosthodontists have advanced training in procedures involving crowns, dental implants, bridges, veneers, inlays, and partial or complete dentures.

The Dangers of Oral Piercing

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

The Dangers of Oral Piercing If you live in the San Diego area and are considering puncturing your lip or tongue, read this:

Infection
Your mouth is full of bacteria. Any opening in the tissue carries the risk of infection. The germs from your tongue and mouth can easily get into your bloodstream. San Diego dentists and doctors are continually treating serious infections caused by oral piercings. Oral infections can be a real problem, and should be a major consideration before getting an oral piercing.

Tooth Damage
It should come as no surprise that having a piece of metal bang around in your mouth can easily chip tooth enamel. Though tooth enamel is amazingly strong, once it’s chipped or cracked, it can only be restored with artificial material. Fortunately, Marcos Ortega DDS in San Diego offers many tooth restoration options such as crowns and fillings, but our advice is to avoid the problem if you can.

Prolonged Bleeding and Swelling
The blood vessels in the tongue are often damaged when the tongue is pierced, causing prolonged bleeding and possible build-up of scar tissue. In some cases, the tongue swells up enough to block the airway.

Gum Recession
A number of periodontal disease studies have shown that wearing oral jewelry is linked to periodontal disease which can result in tooth loss. Periodontal disease, or ‘gum disease’, can cause gum recession and exposes the root of your teeth, potentially causing hyper sensitivity and pain. Again, our advice is to avoid the problem right from the start.

These are just a few of the dangers. Dr. Marcos Ortega at Marcos Ortega DDS can give you more information about the risks of oral piercings. If you already have damage, call 619-295-4545 to schedule a consultation.
