Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities because is difficult to reach them with a tooth brush and the surfaces contain pits and grooves that easily trap bacteria. It is hard for many adults to clean their back molars and almost impossible for young children.

Dental sealants fill in the pits and grooves on the rear molars to create a smooth surface. San Diego general and cosmetic dentists most often recommend sealants for children’s permanent back teeth, though sometimes they are used for adults, too.

Dental sealants protect teeth that have no decay (primary prevention) and also prevent further decay progression in teeth that show very early signs of disease (secondary prevention).

Affordable Teeth Whitening?

If you are like most San Diego web users, you have probably seen the multitude of ads for ‘free teeth whitening kits’.

Some show a ‘real Hillcrest mom’ who discovered a ‘tooth whitening secret’. Others assure you that their system is the one that ‘Mission Hills, Mission Valley dentists don’t want you to know about’. Many contain a link to a page that contains a convincing Bankers Hill tooth whitening testimonial. They bolster their legitimacy by aligning themselves with respected companies such as CNN, USA Today and Forbes.

Unfortunately, most of these are rip-offs. In a recent article, the Better Business Bureau explains the scam:

The countless Web sites for various teeth whitening products claim to offer a no-risk, money back guarantee, free trial of the product. To sign up, customers must provide a credit or debit card number to cover shipping. Complainants to BBB state that they are billed before their trial ends and continue to be billed after they have told the company they want to cancel.

Complainants also may find mystery charges for other companies and services that they didn’t realize they were signing up for with their ‘free’ trial.

Do Whitestrips Work?

If you have visited the toothpaste aisle at your Hillcrest Wal-Mart, you have probably noticed dozens of products that claim to whiten your teeth. A few years ago, the only over-the-counter tooth whitening options in Hillcrest were whitening toothpastes and Crest Whitestrips. Now there is a wide variety of products at every drugstore counter in the Hillcrest area.

Whitening Rinses
Mission Hills, Mission Valley, and Hillcrest whitening rinses are similar to mouthwashes. They kill bacteria, freshen breath and may help remove plaque. Whitening rinses, however, contain tooth-whitening ingredients not found in mouthwashes. Manufacturers advise taking a mouthful of the rinse and letting it slosh around on your teeth for one minute twice a day. Though this method is simple, many users never notice a lightening of their teeth. This is probably because the rinse does not touch your teeth long enough to truly whiten them.

Whitening Strips
The whitening strips you can buy in Hillcrest grocery stores have a couple of drawbacks. Though they contain a bleaching agent, it is much less potent than those used in Bankers Hill dental offices. Another problem is that they do not whiten between teeth because the strips only touch the front surface. Though it is possible to remove stains, it can take months to see any whitening. By that point, you have probably spent more money than you would have if you’d have chosen the professional system at your Hillcrest tooth whitening dental clinic.

Teeth Whitening Gels
Whitening gels are painted onto teeth with a small brush. One problem with whitening gels is that they only stick to dry teeth. If any saliva gets on the teeth during treatment, the gel is more likely to slide off.
